Wrapped in rolling tea plantations and framed by misty mountain peaks, Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most enchanting destinations. From iconic train journeys and scenic hikes to hidden waterfalls and cosy cafés, this charming hill town offers the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you’re visiting for two days or a week, this guide will help you uncover everything that makes Ella so unforgettable.
How to get to & around Ella
One of the most memorable ways to arrive in Ella is by train. While the town can be reached by road from destinations across Sri Lanka, including Colombo and the southern coast, the train journey is an experience in itself—and one that deserves a place on every itinerary.
Ella’s town centre is compact and wonderfully walkable within easy strolling distance. It’s the perfect place to slow down and explore on foot.
Many of Ella’s most iconic attractions, however—including the Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Falls, and trailheads for Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock—are located a little further from town. The easiest and most convenient way to reach these spots is by tuk-tuk, with drivers readily available throughout the town centre, near the train station, and at most major attractions. As with many popular tourist destinations, it’s worth agreeing on a fare before setting off. Don’t be afraid to politely negotiate the price or ask your accommodation for an indication of a fair rate beforehand. A friendly smile and a little confidence will usually help you secure a reasonable fare.

Best things to do and see
Ride the train from Kandy to Ella
The train journey from Kandy to Ella is more than just a way to travel—it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic experiences. Winding through misty mountains, rolling tea plantations, lush forests, and charming hillside villages, the journey offers some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery and is well worth the seven-hour trip.
Affordable, unforgettable, and endlessly photogenic, it’s easy to see why this route has become a bucket-list experience for travellers. Whether you’re admiring the ever-changing landscapes from your window or feeling the cool mountain breeze through the open carriage doors, the journey to Ella is every bit as memorable as the destination itself.

Admire Ella’s 9-arch-bridge
The nine-arch-bridge is one of Ella’s most popular hotspots. Designed by British engineer Harold Cuthbert Marwood, the colonial masterpiece was build between 1913 and 1921 for the purpose of tea transportation. Made of stone and brick, the structure is nestled between tea plantations and rugged cliffs, making for a breathtaking site.

View the epic Ravana Falls
As soon as I stepped out of the gates of the train station, my eyes were immediately drawn into the distance where a cascading waterfall, burrowed into Ellas rugged cliffs that can be seen from the main street. The waterfall can be visited via the windy roadside of Wellawaya road which is breathtaking. However, be aware that the falls are unsafe to swim in.
Stroll the Streets of Ella
One of the best ways to experience Ella is simply by wandering its streets. The lively town centre is filled with cosy cafés, local fruit stalls, boutique shops, and relaxed bars, creating a welcoming atmosphere that’s easy to fall in love with.
While most visitors stay near the train station, it’s worth exploring beyond the main street. The quieter roads are home to family-run cafés, more affordable eateries, friendly locals, and stunning views of Ella’s mist-covered mountains, making every stroll feel like an adventure.

Search the food scene
One of Sri Lanka’s greatest assets is its food scene, especially when it comes to its curries. It is standard for multiple curries to be served with a bowl of rice. This is often accompanied by pol sambol, a savoury coconut dish. Almost always, the curries are made to order using fresh local produce and regional recipes. Despite Ella being reasonably “touristy”, the food remains incredible. Opt for smaller restaurants such as the Matey Hut and Nanda Restaurant.
Go on a Safari
Ella is the perfect base for a day trip to some of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular national parks. Nearby Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park, and Lunugamvehera National Park offer the chance to see wild elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, monkeys, and an incredible variety of birdlife, while Yala is also renowned for having one of the highest densities of Sri Lankan leopards in the world. We were fortunate enough to enjoy Yala and spot Luca, the oldest leopard within the park.
Whether you choose a sunrise or afternoon safari, it’s an unforgettable way to experience the country’s remarkable wildlife.

Take a cooking class
A Sri Lankan cooking class is one of the best ways to experience Ella beyond its beautiful landscapes. Learn to prepare traditional favourites using fresh local ingredients and aromatic spices, before sitting down to enjoy the meal you’ve created. For an authentic and highly rated experience, Matey Hut is a local favourite, while Ella Spice Garden Cooking Class is another excellent choice for those wanting to take a taste of Sri Lanka home with them.

Dawn view homestay – Budget friendly
To be completely honest, there’s infinite air bnb and homestay options throughout Ella, however Dawn View completely stood out. We enjoyed doing homestays throughout our trip because it allows one to connect with the locals and learn about hidden gems, while engaging in the cultural aspects that resorts don’t necessarily offer.
Whilst extremely affordable, Dawn view homestay was one of most unique and beautiful accomodation that i’ve stayed in on my travels! Located between Ella town centre and Navana falls, the accomodation was perfect to enjoy the quiet jungle surrounds whilst not being too far away from the town centre. At times homestay hosts can be…. dishonest, but not here. The host was extremely welcoming, giving us advice on where to visit and short cuts to access the town. To top off the experience, we were given breakfast for a small extra charge and it’s still one of the best highlights of Sri Lanka.
