Dog road trip essentials: The ultimate dog travel checklist

It’s no secret that I’ve had my heart stolen by my beloved Australian Cattle dog, Lulu. After adopting my four-legged companion, we quickly bonded over something that we both love…adventuring!

It wasn’t long before Lulu and I were traveling somewhere new together every chance we had. From coastal camping trips on our home turf in Australia, to hiking the lush countryside in Yorkshire, England, It’s fair to say we’ve been living it up and Lulu is perhaps better travelled than most people!

During this time, we have also learnt and developed strategies for travel and have come across some handy items that have helped make our road trips that much more enjoyable.

Here’s a list of must have essentials for road tripping with your furry friend!

Food water & dishes: Food and water is an obvious need for our beloved four-legged friends, but it’s one of the most underprepared things that people bring on road trips. I always pack dry food and water in two portable bottles along with a travel concertina bowl that fits neatly flat into or attached to a backpack.

Pet bag: Lulu has her very own weekend duffle bag and backpack which is completely dedicated to her care and needs. This keeps everything neatly packed together and ready for show time. From her food to her lead, this is an essential travel item that every dog parent must bring.

Updated ID tags and microchip: Ensuring that your pets’ ID has your most up to date contact number and address is an absolute must. No matter how prepared we can be, there are a number of unpredicted circumstances that can result in your beloved pet becoming lost. Investing in an up to date tag and ensuring your pets microchip details are current should be something every pet owner ensures before leaving for any trip.

Toys: Prolonged periods of sitting in a car can be boring for all of us, let alone our pooches. Investing in a toy that keeps our furry friends preoccupied and busy such as a kong, is a wise investment to keep them distracted from distracting you, especially when driving.
