When it comes to wine, Mudgee bats well above its weight with over 70 wineries and 35 cellar doors within the local region. However, despite having a couple of breweries scattered around town, Mudgee hadn’t quiet achieved quite the levels of fame for the local beer scene. That is until recently…
After many recommendations and badgering from my husband, I finally visited the newest brewery in town, Small Batch Brewery & hop farm which is located 16 kilometres north of Mudgee. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with just about everything on offer. The incredible countryside views, unique architecture and a delicious drinks menu, it quickly became one of my favourite local places to have sit back and enjoy a beer.
Opening hours & location
The brewery is only open from Friday to Sunday. Whilst the opening times are from 12-5pm on a Friday, the weekends are open from 11am-5pm.
As mentioned the brewery is approximately a 15 minute drive out of town, nestled in the country side and neighbouring a couple of renowned wineries such as Peter Van Gent and Slow fox wines. The distinctive black contemporary meets country barn styled architecture is easily recognisable from the road. There’s a pebbled car park and paddock to park your car in.

Drink & food
There are a number of low volume artisan brewed limited edition beers to choose from on the drinks menu ranging from pale ale to pilsener. The beers are served in Belgian inspired schooner and pot glasses which I loved. For those still not keen on the barley nectar, there are a number of locally sourced wines and non-alcoholic options available.
The brewery doesn’t have its own house kitchen, however they do host a van which sells mouth modern fusion meals incorporating cuisines such as Chinese and Mexican. The mouth watering meals are absolutely delicious and are present throughout opening hours.
The brewery
Owners Anton and Amanda created their business after spending a decade of trial and error of trying to brew the ‘perfect’ beer. Since launching small batch brewery in 2016, their beers have gone on to win a number of awards and can now be enjoyed by beer lovers from their own backyard.
The brewery consists of the front of shop, showcasing shining brew kettles where the magic of brewing takes place, along with a number of local art pieces displayed. The rustic ambiance extends into the intimate white pebbled courtyard, where a number you will find tables and chairs shaded by umbrellas and a gorgeous corten steel sculpture. The intimate setting, friendly faces and tap poured beer unite to create a charming and relaxing atmosphere for all to enjoy. The location is also child friendly offering a playground and pet goats.
