Bellingen. Simply put, a beautiful alternate town nestled in lush sub-tropical bushland, large koala populations, gushing waterfalls and whimsical water holes.
The town a few kms inland from the Northern NSW coast. It lies approximately 30 minutes South of Coffs Harbour. Along with nearby towns such as Dorrigo and Byron Bay, it has the same hippy, connect to nature type of vibe, and there’s no wonder why. It is filled with natural phenomena that appears to be taken straight out of a fairy tale story.
A “secret” fresh water swimming destination, the Promised land swimming hole is roughly twenty minutes drive from the town centre, with the drive taking you through winding hill ranges and over clear flowing waters.
Finding the promised land water hole
The river is crossed by a wooden bridge next to Angel Gabriel reserve. There are areas on the side of the road where you can park your car with ease.
The pretty bit starts just off the road, however the real beauty lies approximately 5 minutes north of the bridge. There is a walking track that will take you through the forest and to the beautiful blue and surreal swimming hole.
Swimming in the promised land
It’s hard not to let a “wow” out as you near the river. The water is so clear you can see metres below the waters’ surface into the rocks below. The water also has a gorgeous turquoise tinge, something the location is so well known for.
There’s a number of small rapids that allows the water to trickle through rocks, giving a magical waterfall effect that is perfect to sit in. There is also a deeper area that’s perfect for cooling down in on a hot day. Several ropes are hanging off tree branches to climb and jump into the water with. If you look up you may also spot the occasional koala, only adding to how special this destination actually is.
The best part is that the swimming hole is dog friendly in which your four legged companions can join you for a splash.
Whether it be to cool down on a summers day, having a picnic or simply just wandering around the woods and enjoying the view, this is truly a must visit destination when visiting Bellingen.
