When you hear New Zealand, your first thoughts may be of Snow capped mountains, volcanoes, Maori sculptures and ski slopes, however it has so much more on offer! Recently We made a trip to the North Island to a destination that wasn’t really on anyones radar, Hawkes Bay.
Despite being off the beaten path, Hawkes bay is home to world famous wines, the art deco capital of the world, Napier, scenic beaches and breathtaking landscapes. Travelling in the camping van was the enabler that lead us to stumble across a last minute camp site, Waipatiki beach holiday park.
The camping grounds
Located 30 minutes North of Napier, the camping grounds are in a remote location – or feel this way at least. Engulfed by pine forrest, dramatic hills and black sand beaches, the destination is perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and reconnecting with nature.
The camp grounds are held on a farm, meaning dirt roads which are easily accessibly by car. There are tens of sites within the grounds, suitable for both caravans and tents in which are powered and unpowered. There are also cabins that can be rented however these are limited. Regardless of where you are situated, the views can be seen from all sites.
A stream of water runs along the camping ground in which joins into the Pacific Ocean that is only a mere 100 metres away. The beach is undoubtedly beautiful and a perfect place to cool down in Summer. Keep in mind that bug spray will not go astray, as there are some mosquitoes and sand flies in the area however, not as bad as the West coast.
The sites are open and family orientated, and has open green areas for the kids to play and equally as easy to keep an eye on them. We personally don’t have kids, but this added to a wholesome atmosphere.
The facilities
There are a block of toilets, both male and female founds centrally on the grounds. There are two showers and three toilets in each bathroom. Keep in mind the showers do require a $1 NZD coin for the hot water to work.
You can also purchase items such as drinks, snack food, bug spray and sunscreen at the reception. But I’d recommend coming prepared due to being a windy road back into Napier.
Booking a site
You can book a site online. The area was busy when we arrived to booking in advance is recommended. During peak season it is recommended to book a site at least 30 days in advance in which a full payment will be required. The refund during this time however, is non refundable so take this into consideration as your planning your itinerary.
The prices vary, but you can find the price list here!
Happy camping!
